FORM 1 Lesson plan : Lesson 3&4

In the provided SOW, the activity and materials mention was about the Candy's shopping trip. However, no material can be found across the internet. So, after I checked in the CEFR group also they could find no material, I google about any shopping trip.

it also provide a video. I did not show it to pupils because of the time constraint.

This simple reading material caught my eyes. It is from British council. It is simple and easily understood by my average to low proficiency pupils. Furthermore, it also cater the learning standard about coordinating conjunction and pronouns reference. Plus simple past tense in lesson 4.

Perkongsian Template RPH / Tapak RPH Automatik

Writing Technique : Apply 42211

This is a writing technique shared by one of Excellent Teacher in my district. I have asked my students to use it and it helps a lot in intermediate and weaker students as it gives outline in what students need to write.

All my students face the same problem in writing as they can not generate ideas to write in English. So using this formula, they can manage to write.

When developing ideas, students may write about :

·         4 descriptions of a place / event / person / activity / surrounding
·         2 actions done
·         2 senses (things seen, smelt, touched, tasted or heard)
·         1 feeling
·         1 wish / hope

Example :
Last week, I went to Jinjang Waterfall (place). The waterfall was very beautiful (D1/description 1). It was quite high (D2). There were two small waterfalls beside Jinjang Waterfall (D3). There were also many beautiful flowers near the waterfall (D4). My brother and I swam at the waterfall (action).  We tried to catch a fish with our hand but we failed (action). The water was very clear (sight). It was also very cold (touch). I felt happy (feeling). I wished my father could swim with us (wish).

Lesson Material - prefix suffix

PBS Form 3 Band 2 DB1 E1 requires students to identify prefixes and suffixes in a text and forming new words using prefixes. Click here to view my instrument.

So these are the materials that I use to teach my classes.

I follow the lesson notes from http://writingfix.com/I_Pod_Prompts/Unwritten3.htm

Taking the Un out of Unwritten

teaching prefixes and suffixes while asking students to write about how to live well

This lesson was created by Northern Nevada teacher Abby Olde during the NNWP's iPods Across the CurriculumWorkshop.

Teacher Instructions & Lesson Resources :

Pre-step…before sharing the published model:  From Abby: "This lesson would work well in conjunction with spelling lessons, vocabulary lessons, etc. I use this lesson to introduce/review the grammar concept of prefixes, suffixes and roots. My middle school students are a mixed bag: some of them are familiar with prefixes and suffixes, some of them have forgotten, some of them have never been taught them."
Before this iPod lesson, I ask students in my class who is familiar with a prefix, suffix, and root word. I ask for student definitions in their own words and for examples. Without giving any feedback, I just jump right into this lesson.

Step one…sharing the published model:  First, I give students the following three-part journal question:
  1. Think of five of the longest words that you use in your written or oral communication on a regular basis? Write them down.
  2. Can any of these words be made into smaller words? Write them here. What did you do to make them into smaller words?
  3. Do you know what a prefix or suffix is? Explain in your own words.
Next, I conduct an “Accountable Talk” discussion about this journal topic with my students.
I then pass out the educationalrap.com lyrics and graphic organizer for the rap song “Prefixes, Suffixes, Roots.” Students read the lyrics silently while the song is played from my iPod; you can also play the song directly from the website. After the song is played once, I play it again while students complete the Four Square Notes organizer on the right side of the handout.
After their four square organizer is completed, we discuss as a class some of the student responses from the handout. I encourage students to think of as many examples of words using these prefixes, suffixes and roots as possible.
On my overhead/projector, I ask students to copy down first the Root Word” notes and then the Prefix and Suffix” notes. I make sure to discuss these notes thoroughly with the class, eliciting as many student examples as possible for other prefixes and suffixes and words that are examples of these prefixes and suffixes. The point is that students are thinking of and brainstorming great words throughout each step of this lesson.
I handout Commonly Used Prefixes and Suffixes” worksheet. This is only one example of any handout you would like to use on this topic for your students depending on what you are working on. You may want to include a different list of prefixes and suffixes to better match your curriculum. As a class we go over many of these and talk about ones that maybe students are not familiar with.
Handout the “Unwritten” lyrics (by Natasha Bedingfield) and this graphic organizer. Ask students to read over the lyrics silently, underlining or highlighting words that have a prefix or a suffix (or both) as they read. Ask students to complete the graphic organizer on the right while they listen to the song from the iPod . After playing the song and giving students time to finish their graphic organizers, discuss the organizer as a class.
On the backside of the above lyrics/organizer, I include the prewriting for the Prefix/Suffix writing assignment. In the last few lines of “Unwritten,” the songwriter says: “No one else, no one else can speak the words on your lips, Drench yourself in words unspoken, Live your life with arms wide open, Today is where your book begins, The rest is still unwritten.” Using the graphic organizer from both iPod songs, students will begin the prewriting for the assignment: to write about how to live your life with arms wide open using as many prefixes, suffixes, and roots as possible.
Before they begin writing rough drafts, have students look over a few of the student models we have attached to this lesson.

Step two…introducing student models of writing: In small groups, have your students read and respond to any or all of the student models that come with this lesson.  The groups should certainly talk about the Conventionssince that's the focus of this lesson, but you might prompt your students to talk about each model's Word Choice as well.
  • Because this is a new lesson at WritingFix, we're looking for student samples for all grade levels!  Help us get some, and we'll send you a free resource for your classroom!  Visit our student samples page for information.

Step three…thinking and pre-writing:  Students begin drafting their pieces of writing, thinking to about how to live life with arms wide open; they are to use as many prefixes, suffixes, and roots as possible in their rough draft. You might have them compose their writing on this drafting sheet, which re-states the assignment's directions and purpose.

Step four (revising with specific trait language):   To promote response and revision to rough draft writing, attach WritingFix's Revision and Response Post-Its to your students' drafts.  Make sure the students rank their use of the trait-specific skills on the Post-Its, which means they'll only have one "1" and one "5."   Have them commit to ideas for revision based on their Post-It rankings.  For more ideas on WritingFix's Revision & Response Post-Its, click here.

Step five (editing for conventions):  After students apply their revision ideas to their drafts and re-write neatly, require them to find an editor.   If you've established a "Community of Editors" among your students, have each student exchange his/her paper with multiple peers.  With yellow high-lighters in hand, each peer reads for and highlights suspected errors for just one item from theEditing Post-it.  The "Community of Editors" idea is just one of dozens and dozens of inspiring ideas that is talked about in detail in the Northern Nevada Writing Project's Going Deep with 6 Trait Language Workbook for Teachers.

Step six (publishing for the portfolio):   When they are finished revising and have second drafts, invite your students to come back to this piece once more during an upcoming writer's workshop block.  Their thoughts might become a longer story, a more detailed piece, or the beginning of a series of pieces about the ideas they started here.  Students will probably enjoy creating an illustration for this story as they get ready to publish it for their portfolios.
Interested in publishing student work on-line?  We invite student writers to post final drafts of their original at WritingFix's Community of Student Writers.  This is a safe-to-use blog for students and teachers. No writing is posted until it is approved by the moderator. Contact us atpublish@writingfix.com if you have questions about getting your students published.

Extension ideas for this lesson: Once students feel comfortable identifying prefixes and suffixes, you can do very creative things with them. This list of cool and obscure words with interesting affixes is always popular with my students. I also have them create their own brand new words, showing their knowledge of roots.

So, in conclusion the materials are :

Induction set
1. a rap song entitle - prefixes suffixes and roots .I used the youtube because I can not download the mp3.
2. a worksheet - the four square notes organizer which students have to write answer based on the rap song about prefixes, suffixes and roots. My students enjoy this song very much.

While teaching
3. 2 pdf notes on roots, prefixes and suffixes. I just showed to the students  and I asked them to copy the notes in their exercise book.
4. a handout of common prefixes and suffixes. I did not use the material from the author because it was so comprehensive. I used the easier version from  http://teacher.scholastic.com/reading/bestpractices/vocabulary/pdf/prefixes_suffixes.pdf to suit my students' level.

Reinforcement / exercise
5. Unwritten song with the organizer. Students listen to the song while identifying and answering the questions. I only use this for my upper class.
6. for my lower class I distributes dictionary and ask them to list as many words that they based on the prefixes and suffixes given.
7. a writing assignment which I gave for my upper class only.

Here are more exercises http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/language_arts/prefix/

Updated : 17 Feb 2014

I have tried it to my LEP students. They enjoyed the rap song, but just listening to the music and they can not understand or fill in the graphic organizers.Next time I will omit this song.

Lesson Material - Colour Poem

I got this idea while browsing the internet. I think it is from englishoasis.

It is a great time filler and I sometimes use this when I enter relief class. My students enjoyed the activity and it is great for lower class too.

What do you have to do is asks students to think of their favourite colour and fill in the poem.
___________ smells like ________________,
Sound like a __________________________,
Looks like a __________________________,
Feels like a __________________________ ,
Taste like a ________________________ .

Then, I ask students to list out items of their colour.

Here are some of my students’ works.

Homophones Lesson Materials

English PBS B1 DL1 E1 (form 3) instrumen is about homophones. This is how I introduced homophones to my students. View the instrumen here.

Homophones word list. You can download here.

Here are more materials. You can google more. Suit your students' level.

During the lesson :

Form 3 Trip Itinerary

English PBS B1 DT1 E1 (Form 3) requires students to write a trip itinerary. This is the material that I used to teach my classes.

I searched for three places of interest. After I've downloaded it, I printed and laminated it.  It will be durable for my classes even for my next year. Hopefully it will survive the rough handling of my students.

Then I brought it in my class, asked the students to work in groups and write their trip itinerary. They can select various places to go to and what activity that they can see or do there. I also asked them to add breakfast, lunch and dinner in their plan.

Here  are the places that I've downloaded. Feel free to use them.

PBS Instrument English Form 3 Band 1

I made my own PBS instruments because I did not have any instrument for my Form 3 classes. I had been searching in the internet but discover only this Syedsyahrul's blog.

I made the instrument based on the DSP and one book that been given by our book supplier.

Lesson Materials : Jobs / occupation

This year I've been assigned to teach Form 2. It has been two years since the last time I teach this Form and that time I haven't get the insight to file my notes and worksheets for my lesson. So right now I'm scrambling franticly to assemble lesson materials to make my lesson lively and interesting.

I'm not a kind of teacher that depend heavily on the textbook because I find it quite boring and when I went through most of my students' textbook, there already been jot down with answers from previous year students and many more doodles.

Sigh.

So, right now I'm searching high and low for lesson materials and there are some I would like to share.
